enclosure

Land demarcation using boundaries, usually associated with the restriction of rights of ownership or use on that land, and the processes through which these physical and tenurial restrictions are achieved. However, the physical separation of land parcels and the restriction of use-rights need not change in parallel. Much discussion has involved the social consequences of enclosure: for example, during conversion of cooperative field systems to individualistic landownership and control in the emergence of agrarian capitalism (Neeson, 1993). (PDG)
