action space

A concept used in behavioural geography to define the area within which an individual makes locational decisions, such as where to shop, which house to purchase, and which church to attend. The relevant locations within that space are evaluated and assigned place utilities; if none of the utility values is high enough to meet the individual\'s threshold satisfaction level, then the action space within which search behaviour occurs may be extended or the threshold revised (cf. activity space; mental map). (RJJ)
