equity

Fairness or justice. Equity may be manifest in equality, but the two are not necessarily synonymous. For example, it is widely accepted that payment by results or at different rates for different levels of skill and responsibility is fair. That social services should be distributed according to need is commonly held to be equitable; different levels of need can therefore justify unequal treatment. In a geographical context, equity in distribution among areas is achieved when any differences or departures from equality are proportional to differences in accepted entitlement such as need (see social justice). (DMS)
