                | | density gradient | |
                | | | |
                | | The rate of falling-off of land-use intensity (or population density etc.) with distance from a central point, as in the distance decay relationship identified in the Alonso and von Thünen models of land-use distributions. Colin Clark (1951) noted that population density declines exponentially with distance from the central business district, and further empirical studies have replicated his findings: in general the younger the city, the shallower the gradient. (RJJ)
