Originally the British term for an urban settlement containing a cathedral and the seat of a bishop, city is now generally applied to large urban places. The criteria for distinguishing cities from towns vary between countries: in some, population size is the determining factor; in others, the status of city implies an administrative rank and carries with it certain rights and privileges. (RJJ) |
