categorical data analysis

A set of statistical procedures employed when one or more of the variables is measured at a nominal scale only (see measurement). Standard regression methods cannot be used with such data because they violate several of the statistical assumptions underlying the general linear model. Categorical data analysis methods avoid those problems and provide robust procedures for estimating linear relationships with nominal data. (RJJ)
